Florida Flight to Play in the World Basketball Association

Effective February 17, 2010, the Florida Flight will partake in the
upcoming 2010 World Basketball Association (WBA).

The team, located in Kissimmee, Florida, is majority owned and
operated by Mark King, a former minor league professional basketball
player, and Dr. Jonathan Mitchell, a practicing pediatric dentist.

Originally planning to play in the Premier Basketball League (PBL), King and Mitchell altered the original flight plan to take a more regional approach for the first year to minimize the heavy burden of travel costs associated with playing in a league predominantly located in the Northeast.

"We've carefully evaluated our goals for the first year, and we believe the concern of covering the travel costs associated with playing in the PBL would only distract us from what we really want to accomplish as a newly developed team," said Mark King, Co-Founder and President of the Florida Flight. “We researched the minor league landscape in the southeast, and it was clear to us that the WBA was the ideal place for us to leave the gate and head toward the runway for launch.”

The proclamation is the first new team announcement for the upcoming 2010 WBA season.

“We have paid close attention to the Florida Flight for the past year or so, and we knew we were getting a quality ownership group with an innovative approach towards minor league basketball,” said Lionel Garrett, Commissioner of the WBA. “Adding the Flight to our 2010 list of teams should be mutually beneficial for both the Flight and the WBA.”

The league change will push the Flight eight months ahead of the scheduled launch of January 2011.

"When you have businesses approaching you for your sponsorship package, you know you have developed something special," said King, who is currently in the process of solidifying the venue contract and several other sponsorship contracts. "We've marketed the team, and made some key connections within the community. It is time for us to get on the hardwood, compete, and bring some much-needed retail traffic to the downtown area of Kissimmee."

The mission of the Florida Flight is to "Utilize the platform of professional basketball to promote a positive, healthy, morally sound society that values the importance of teaching critical societal elements like teamwork, leadership, accountability, and love and respect for others."

King, who is also in the process of completing a Master of Science Degree in Organizational Leadership from Palm Beach Atlantic University, expressed excitement about fusing two of the things he is most passionate about: basketball and Christian ministry. He also confirmed his intentions to take a Christian-themed approach to professional basketball with the Florida Flight.

"We aren't trying to preach sermons and hold alter calls at halftime," explained King. "We will, however, create a seeker-friendly environment at our games where both Christians and non- Christian can enjoy high-quality basketball at an affordable price. The underlying motive will be to promote Christian values and principles in a non-threatening manner so that people of various backgrounds are exposed to the foundational truths of Christianity."

The WBA will be holding its annual free agent camp March 26-27 at Rhodes Jordan Park in Lawrenceville, GA. Members of the Florida Flight crew plan to be in attendance with the hopes of filling out their 10-man active roster.

“We’ll be announcing our coaching staff within the coming weeks. We hope to have a commitment from our top candidate in time for the WBA free agent camp,” said King, who plans to incorporate a Phoenix Suns-style offense with the Flight. “We’re particularly interested in finding a couple of athletic big men with quick outlet passing abilities, strong defensive tendencies, and the conditioning to get up and down the floor at a frantic pace.”

The WBA will begin its 2010 season boasting teams from Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee. The league will play an 18-game season starting in May. Commissioner Lionel Garrett is excited about the future of the 7th year league.

“Minor league basketball has had a tumultuous couple of years, but we are extremely excited about what the future holds for the WBA,” said Garrett. “The basketball part comes easy. Our goal is to add quality owners who have the business savvy and marketing skills necessary to be successful in this business both on and off the court. We believe that we took a step in this direction by welcoming the Florida Flight into the WBA family.”

Most excellent at night it was the debut of the new player of the Red Hawks of Veracruz, Gerarld Eaker, that good things were to him in hurts it and which it gives hopes to the aspirations of the emplumado equipment. And it is that Gerald Eaker showed good things, although him lack still more connection with the system of the trainer Enrique Ortega Enríquez, since practically came lowering from the airplane to take part in the party in the audience "Benito Juárez". With this marker the Red Hawks of Veracruz arrive at fourteen victories by eight defeats in which it goes of the season. Whereas the Brave ones of Black Stones arrived at six victories and fifteen defeats. In this party, Charles Byrd "woke up" and wrote down important points, although single he is in not at all complicated parties, whereas Lawrence Nelson returned to commit errors in boards and until in problems of lack since he had to leave hurts it, returning to leave in clear that he is not for great things dressing the colors the Red Hawks. The first quarter was tight and Brave they made honor to his name because they played to him of you you the Red Hawks of Veracruz, although they failed in many occasions and the speed was fundamental so that the border ones matched the quarter to 22 points by side. In the second quarter the defense of the Red Hawks was applied and were accurate in the firings as much of two as of three points. In addition, the entrance of Edgar Grove was determining so that the emplumados ones woke up and take hold confidence in the party. In the third fourth and in the last period the constant was the same one, in where Brave the single one was dangerous by means of Alex Hill, that was the best man of the border equipment. A very first quarter had fought the Mayans and Braves, as visitors had a "slippery" Ephraim Acuna, who had not failed to take advantage of his speed to be present in the marker, which resulted in record 12 units that period. With some coordination problems, the Indians tried to get in the fight, which succeeded with a good performance Yucatan Brandon Heredia and . With 40 seconds on the clock, the Mayans ahead 24-23 with enceste Lee Benson, but the fast Acuna led the Braves win the first quarter, 25-24 The second part began with problems, as the Piedras Negras managed to anticipate 39-31, with five minutes on the clock, thanks to the American Alex Hill.
However, little by little, each of the natives began to make its "grain of sand" and a triple by Roberto Eliserio, with only 20 seconds on the clock, allowed them to be down by only two units, 48-46, ordered to the end of the first half. Worse was unable to begin the third quarter for the home, as the Braves encestaron nine points in a row ahead 57-46 with seven minutes on the clock.
But suddenly the coach Ricardo Lopez found the best offensive weapon, and that was the American Lee Benson, who began to give all the balls, which not only aprovechó con puntos, sino que le sacó valiosas faltas a los jugadores visitantes. Took advantage with points, but he drew valuable faults players visitors. That allowed with one minute and 11 seconds on the clock, Benson write a double and then commit failure to achieve a simple, and allow the Indians to take the lead , 63-62. But the Braves were not willing to lose so easy and slowly began to cut the disadvantage to the degree that came to be only three points down, 86-83, but Benson appeared and identified the triumph.

The Jam and Aces have battled all season long from the first game of the season, which the Jam won on a shot at the buzzer 124-121, and nearly all of their games have been close ones all during this season. In the first half on Thursday night, that script held sound as the Aces battled the Jam on every possession. Jacksonville controlled the game early on in the opening period and opened up a 14 point lead, but Orlando battled back near the end of the first quarter and on into the second quarter and cut the Jam lead to 48-42 with only seconds remaining in the first half, but veteran Jam center, Tony Holley hit a 16 foot jumper as the first half closed to put the Jam up 50-42 at half-time.

The Aces led by ABA All-Star, Alex Hill opened the second half on a 13-5 run to tie the score at the 7:30 mark of the third quarter at 55-55. From that point, the Jam went on a 12-0 run to take control of the game. Antonio "Red" Lawrence started the run with a 3 pointer and Jerry Williams followed up with another 3. A steal by Bobby St. Preux, which led to another Williams basket put the Jam clear of Orlando, and the Jam were up 67-55 when Orlando finally called time-out. Jacksonville extended its lead to 24 points as the third quarter came to a close, and in the final period of play the Jam became stronger and dominant . In one stretch the Jam hit four consecutive 3's to open up a 39 point lead with 4:26 to play in the game. From there the Jam cleared the bench and cruised to a 125-95 victory. The Jam once again had a big second half scoring 75 points in the second half and 43 points in the final quarter of play!

"We have a lot of respect for Orlando, for they've played us some close games this season, especially on the road! Alex Hill is one of the best young talents that I've seen in pro basketball in a long time, and he always plays great against us, and truly inspires his teammates!" states Jam head coach, Steve Tucker.

Jacksonville was led in scoring by their ABA All-Star forward, Jerry Williams with 27 points, and Williams also pulled down 8 rebounds. St. Preux scored 21 points for the Jam. Lawrence added 13 points. Anthony Lumpkin, Anthony Hatcher, and DeRon Rutledge chipped in 12 points each. Ray Rose scored 10 points and had 6 assist for the Jam. Nick Wallery had 9 points and 12 rebounds, and Holley came off the Jam bench to pull down 9 rebounds, while playing stellar defense inside for Jacksonville. Hill led Orlando with 27 points.

Game Report on 3/3/06 game- taken from Jaxjam.com

Jacksonville Defeat Aces 99-88 in Orlando

The Jam came out fast early taking total control of the game in the first quarter. Anthony Lumpkin, Jerry Williams, and DeRon Rutledge scored early baskets as Jacksonville spurted ahead, and when Bobby St. Preux nailed a 3 pointer, the Jam pulled clear 17-11 to take control of the game late in the first quarter. Jacksonville led at the end of the first quarter 26-18.

In the second period of play the Jam extended its lead to 23 points as Anthony Hatcher came off the Jam bench to hit two 3's and clearly made his presence felt on the defensive end of the court. Hatcher and Ray Rose created defensive pressure that caused numerous turnovers that led to Jacksonville easy baskets.

The Aces of Orlando would not quit though led by ABA All-Star, Alex Hill. Hill scored 20 points in the first half and led an Orlando run late in the second quarter to cut into the Jam lead. Jacksonville led at half-time 57-40. Jacksonville came out to start the second half again fast and again extended their lead to twenty points. But Orlando would not go away and continued to match the Jam basket for basket throughout the third quarter.

The Jam continued to control the tempo of the game and went into the fourth quarter up by 17 points. The last quarter was controlled by Jacksonville, but Orlando continued to battle as they have all season long. With the Jam up by 16 points with 4 minutes to play Orlando went on a 6-0 run to cut the Jam to 10 points. But Hatcher and Williams created turnovers that led to Jam transition baskets and Jacksonville extended the lead back to 14 points and controlled the game the rest of the way to get the win 99-88.

Williams once again led the Jam in scoring with 23 points. Rutledge had 16 points and 9 rebounds. Both St. Preux and Hatcher contributed 16 points and 8 rebounds a piece. Lumpkin followed up with 14 points and 7 assist. Nick Wallery also chipped in 8 points and had a team high 11 rebounds. Jacksonville played short handed on Saturday afternoon as Jam center, Johnny Tyson was unable to play with a strained muscle in his leg and Antonio Lawrence missed the game because of a death in his family.

Orlando was led with another outstanding performance by Hill, who scored a game high 32 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Only two other Ace players scored in double figures though as Johnny McClendon had 17 points and George McCloud chipped in 16 points

Alex to begin shot perfection with Marvin Harvey

Upon completion of the 2006-07 ABA basketball season and playoffs, Alex will in late March submit his letter of intention for the 2007 NBA draft. Hill will began intensive training along side 25 year shooting coach Marvin Harvey. Alex has worked with Harvey since he was a sophomore in high school playing in AAU tournaments. Alex will train at ex-NBA player and 1991 slam dunk winner Dee Brown’s “Edge” training facility, where Harvey is the director of basketball. “The Edge” is 12,000 sq foot facility with multiple courts, endurance training, and utilizes a state-of-the-art motion video analysis system.

Documentary of basketball journey in the works

Is God given talent, love of the game, unstoppable perseverance, and a dream enough for a 22 year old kid out of nowhere to enter the NBA? Now factor in not playing high school basketball, virtually no college played, and all the odds stacked against him. Sounds like all the makings of a great rags to riches basketball movie. Well, with the vision of author and sports magazine contributor Michael T. Owens this scenario will become reality. Alex has agreed to star in a documentary that will follow him from the end of his All-Star ABA basketball season through his NBA draft process. This will be Owens first stint at video production and film making. For more on Michael T. Owens please visit his website @ www.michaeltowens.com

Alex meets with Sports Specific Trainer Jeff Higuera

The NBA pre-draft camp involves the best collegiate, high school, international, and non divisional players from around the country. These players through invite only converge on a single location (Disney Wide World of Sports last year) to try to secure or increase their draft stock for the later NBA draft. The pre-draft camp consist of drills, games, strength and speed test, and conditioning workouts which are used to help a players draft potential.

With that in mind Alex has consulted with and enlisted Jeff Higuera Director of Sports Specific Training at RDV Sportsplex (base of operation for the Orlando Magic). Jeff works with NBA hopefuls and other athletes in preparing for draft combines and physically performing at the next level. Higuera’s program emphasizes core and functional strength training, explosive resisted training, and flexible joint stability training. Alex will train starting early March all the way until the pre-draft camp which normally begins in June.

Hoop Dreams: Reflections with NBA hopeful Alex Hill

This interview was conducted Jan. 19th 2007 with a NBA hopeful by the name of Alex Hill. The location is sunny Miami at the Bayside Marketplace. Alex specifically asked to meet at this location, so I honored his request. Alex Hill is 6’6, 22, 215lb, lives in Orlando, and plays ABA with the Orlando Aces. He is their teams star and leading scorer averaging 24 points per game, but believes the ABA is a stepping-stone to the ultimate fulfillment of his NBA dream.

How old are you Alex?: I am 22 years old sir

Why did you choose this specific location for this interview?: Well, due to my basketball schedule playing teams from Miami and Palm Beach, It seems as though I am always in the Miami area. So on my off time I like to come out here and listen to live bands, look at the different people that walk through here, and reflect on my life. Also, with Bayside being next door to the Miami Heat’s Arena it feels natural for me to think about my future here.

So you like being near the arena even if your not playing inside of it?: I am not playing in it, ......Yet!!!

Everyone who is currently or was in the NBA had this same dream and they pursued it, so why cant I? Also, my mom always taught us to speak things into existence, so If I said not yet that means I will eventually.

How long have you been playing basketball Alex?: I have been playing basketball all my life pretty much.

What is your earliest basketball memory?: Well my dad’s side of the family has deep basketball roots. My dad played high school ball and his pictures and trophies always surrounded me. My dad’s sister is Brenda Hill the Assistant coach of the Lady Bulldogs at the University of Georgia, and my first cousin is her daughter Tasha Humphrey. So I really didn’t have a choice since it is in my blood, but my earliest memory is going back to the high school my dad played in and getting trampled. He and his old teammates were playing a pick-up game when I wondered on the floor in the middle of it (starts laughing).

Alex, I am sure we can sit and reminisce on your basketball background all day in this beautiful weather, but lets get down to it. What makes Alex a good player?: Shoot, my drive man. My personality has a lot to do with my game on the court. I think it is the mystery behind me that’s intimidating. You never really know what I can do or what I am going to do, but deep down you know I am going to do something and it will be nice.

So does that make you a NBA ready player?: That alone, NO, but those are part of the ingredients of a great NBA star. Look at Jordan, he didn’t really talk much but his mystique spoke louder than any other NBA player, ever! Even if the bulls were loosing by 20 points the other team knew as long as he was in the game the momentum of the game could easily change. I am and have always been that type of player. Once you put me in the game I am instant offence and I am going to score. Many players’ lack the ability to score at will and score only off opportunity.

You sound pretty confident in your game: Look, I am an explosive, no nonsense, take no prisoners type of player and my stats back that up. One day I might shoot 3’s all day and the next I might beast the rim out. One day I may play like a forward and the next like a point guard.

What do you think are your strengths are?: My leaping ability, my penetration to the hole, my mid range jump shot, and m y marketability. The NBA is a business!

My concern is if you are as good of a player as you and from what I‘ve heard everyone says you are, then why are you not already in the league?: Honestly, to me I think my story is the ultimate basketball hustler’s story. I did not play high school ball and played one semester of college basketball, so my lack of exposure is why I am not in the league already.

Have you thought about playing overseas?: Yes I have, I actually think of it all the time. I have already set my sights and my goal to the NBA and although there is nothing wrong with playing overseas, I want to see my goal out to the end.

Why didn’t you play high school and only one semester of college?: My academics, in high school I put basketball above my schoolwork. I did not apply myself in class, because I was always looking out the window at the basketball court. Anytime anyone said Alex Hill the name was automatically associated with basketball, because that is all I knew and was all I was known for.

So why did you play just one semester in college?: Well, my high school senior year I transferred to a private school and pushed my GPA to a 3.5. I went to college out of state in Tifton, GA at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on an athletic scholarship. Once again I got side tracked by basketball. I was finally on a team, I was the star player, and I was away from home and got caught up. I played all the way until winter break and the coach told me I lost my scholarship. I could not afford the out of state’s tuition, so I packed up and moved home.

That had to hurt?: Yea it did, but I came home a focused on school only and mentally matured. When I look back on all the disappointments in my life whether it was self-inflicted or by circumstance, I see how strong of a person it actually made me. I feel like I had to go through that in order for me to be in the position I am in now. I also express to my younger basketball playing cousins to focus on school. If I had my grades together I would already be in the league, so to avoid what I am going through learn to love basketball and school.

And is that the same drive you mentioned earlier when I asked you what makes you good?: Exactly sir, that is what drives me to be the best and strive for the best. I feel like I have paid my dues. I’ve been up, down, close, and miles away. I have never given up and I feel I should be rewarded. When I’m looking into the eyes of my ABA competition I am always saying to myself this guy already had his chance at the NBA. Most of these guys have played D1, overseas, and some even played in the NBA. For whatever reason they are here playing at the same level as me. So them with all their divisional basketball accolades, me with none except word of mouth and those who seen my game, and we are playing on the same court at the same level. Man, I deserve my chance and I will prayerfully get that chance during the NBA Pre-Draft camp. After I declare for the draft and the draft committee invites me (speaking it into existence again), I will go there and play harder than I have ever played in my life. What all the high school and college players worked four years to prove, I will have to prove in one week. All I have to say is don't get caught up in the pre-NBA fame and secure in your draft stock, because I am coming to claim my position.

Alex, I must admit I love you passion. You talk with the wisdom of a person who has played this game for a long time: Thank you sir

What will you contribute to the NBA?: A lot of players get in the league and get fat. I don’t mean physically, but mentally and lifestyle wise. They get in and get caught up in the fame, money, women, and material things that taste good, but are not good for a NBA players development. By fat, I mean get full of the bad things and loose their hunger for the game. It slows them down and it affects the way they play. I will come in the game and give the fans what they paid in money to see, while also giving my family and myself what we paid in time, sweat, tears, and prayers to see.

This is my last question to you Alex and maybe the most important. Who is Alex Hill and what will his NBA legacy be? Think a minute before you answer that: Okay............
Who is Alex? Alex is the son of two incredible, loving, and supportive parents. Alex is humble, approachable, and spiritually grounded. Alex and his game will be respected and never under estimated. Alex is dedicated to his team in times of victory and defeat. Alex is leader, Alex is a fighter, Alex is winner, and a dribbling testimony that God prevails when other say “you will fail”. It will appear that Alex Hill came out of nowhere
starting with the NBA draft camp, and the very circumstance that kept me from previous exposure will be the same thing that will make me a house hold name.

And your legacy?: I want people to say when my NBA career ends that I had the greatest court presence ever. Even if I don’t score the whole night and make one amazing pass, just my presence on the floor in making that pass would have changed the whole momentum of the game. The NBA greats retire from the game still hungry; therefore, it’s not rare to see a player come out of retirement eager to eat again. Like Kobe, I studied the greats and therefore that only makes me a greater player.

Alex’s story is the foundation of what we call The American Dream. A kid from nowhere with only talent and a dream (in his own personal “Pursuit of Happyness” like the Will Smith Movie) rises to become a legend in his own right. Before Alex and I departed he left me with this statement.

I feel and believe 2007 is my year, so next time you interview me we will be talking from the inside of the arena looking out instead of the outside looking in.

ABA Career High For Alex Hill- orlandoaces.com story

January 19, 2007 --Career nights from All-Star Alex Hill and basketball veteran Johnny McClenton was not enough to push the injury-plagued Aces passed the Palm Beach Imperials Thursday night. The Aces came out with tremendous focus and determination, despite playing with only seven players and an Interim Head Coach. McClenton led the Aces with 44 points. 1st-Year All-Star Hill followed with 36, despite battling foul trouble most of the second half. Unfortunately, the Imperials proved to be too much in the fourth quarter and pulled out the victory.

"We played a solid game, but it seemed like we ran out of gas," Interim Coach Mark King said. "We really wanted to get a win and lift Coach Triplett's spirits as he recovers, but...when you're playing with seven guys against a team like the Imperials who run and shoot more 3-pointers than the Phoenix Suns, you're likely to run out of gas towards the end! Every guy on our team gave everything they had! I was proud to Coach tonight, and I'm sure Coach Triplett would have been just as pleased!"

The Aces have been plagued with injuries this month. Two starters, Antonio Lawrence and Renaldo Norman, have been nursing ankle injuries. Defensive energizer Michael Presendieu is recovering from a groin injury. The biggest setback, however, has been the absence of Owner/Head Coach Todd Triplett, who underwent knee surgery this past Tuesday. Fortunately, he is on the road to recovery, and should be ready to rejoin the team soon.

Nevertheless, better days are on the horizon. Both Lawrence and Presendieu are slated to return this Saturday, January 20 as the Aces host the visiting Jacksonville Jam. Norman, whose starting role has been filled temporarily by Ernest Jones, hopes to return the following week.

"I can't say enough about Ernest's play tonight!"Interim Coach Mark King exclaimed. "He brought a lot of energy and heart to the floor. I think he surprised a lot of people tonight! How often does a 5'11" player get 2 blocks in a game? He's been waiting patiently for an opportunity, and he was fully prepared when that opportunity came his way."

The Aces are back at home Saturday, January 20 as they host the Jacksonville Jam at the Downtown Recreation Center. The Jam command the season series 4-1. Advance ticket sales are $5, or $8 at the door. To purchase advanced tickets, fans should send an email request to: tickets@orlandoaces.com or call the Aces office at 407-291-6971.
